"Stretch to Stay, Relax to Go" Tango musings from K'ai
Here's great tango advice for dancers to memorize, and it will be especially
helpful those coming to our classes: "Stretch to Stay, Relax
to Go". This phrase was given us by the great Carlos Gavito, when he
gave a master class in Honolulu while on tour with Forever Tango.
What
it means (in very abbreviated terms - as usual, in tango, there is a
range of subtleties for every situation): there is a shift in energy for
the couple between staying in one place (pausing steps & playing
steps), and moving (forward, back, or side). The energy for staying is
(usually) vertical, or "up": hence: "Stretch to Stay". To initiate
motion in any direction, the leader (almost always)
relaxes/exhales/lowers slightly prior to the directional movement:
"Relax to Go". The follower recognizes these signals (visually/through
the embrace/through awareness) to stay or go and responds accordingly.
The leader then initiates the direction, sends the follower, and follows
her.
All this brings us near to the end of the very first step in a tango dance; and is incorporated into every moment of the dance.
Sound simple? Of course not. It takes time for both leaders & followers absorb the concepts into their muscle and sensory memories.
In the meantime, just practice chanting to yourselves, "Stretch to Stay, Relax to Go."
And watch the video with Carlos Gavito and Marcelo Duran, below, from Forever Tango. In my opinion, it doesn't get any better. Showier, more acrobatic, faster, yes. Better? Not a chance.
